Located in the vibrant heart of Sathon, Bangkok, Laab Ubon Kontrakran is a delightful gem for lovers of authentic Isan cuisine—the distinctive flavors of Thailand’s northeastern region. This restaurant invites you to experience the essence of traditional Thai street food in a lively setting filled with red plastic chairs, bustling energy, and jovial groups sharing moments over hearty meals.
The culinary offerings at Laab Ubon Kontrakran showcase the bold, well-balanced flavors that make Isan cooking renowned. Signature dishes like the laab—a spicy minced meat salad—burst with harmony; tangy, spicy, salty, and slightly sweet notes dance on the palate, especially when paired with fresh, crisp herbs and crunchy raw vegetables. Grill enthusiasts will delight in the tender, juicy gai yang (grilled chicken) that arrives in generous portions, its smoky aroma and succulent texture inviting multiple mouthfuls. The salt-roasted tilapia is another standout, flaky and perfectly seasoned to highlight the natural sweetness of the fish.
Beyond these, the menu brims with diverse Isan specialties such as papaya salad with its punchy sweet-sour-salty zing, pork sour soup, and expertly balanced pad thai boasting fresh, plump prawns. Fried morning glory and flavorful basil pork rice round out the experience with comforting, authentic tastes that truly capture the spirit of Thai street dining.
Atmosphere here is unpretentious and inviting, with the casual street-side dining environment enhancing the convivial vibe. Though the simple plastic furnishings and busy ambiance might seem modest, they create a genuine backdrop where the focus remains firmly on fantastic food and shared enjoyment. This energy is palpable—full of laughter, animated conversations, and the joyful clinking of glasses, especially with the surprisingly affordable and plentiful beer choices available.
While service can occasionally be patchy, as some guests note, the outstanding quality of the cuisine and the hearty, cheerful atmosphere more than compensate. It’s a place where locals and travelers alike gather, reflecting an unvarnished authenticity that many upscale venues strive for but few achieve. Whether you're seeking a lively night out with friends or craving a deeply satisfying Isan feast, Laab Ubon Kontrakran delivers a flavorful journey that is as rich in culture as it is in taste.
In short, this restaurant is a treasure trove of true Northeastern Thai flavor right in Bangkok’s urban fabric. It beckons those eager to indulge in bold, vibrant dishes served in a friendly, bustling environment—a must-visit spot for adventurous eaters yearning to savor Thailand’s culinary soul. Be sure to arrive hungry and ready to savor every spicy, tangy, juicy bite!

Scrummy Isan food in a street side Thai setting replete with red plastic chairs and tables with jolly groups of people. Food is surprisingly excellent and the flavours really pop. The menu is large and varied and the space is fun to while a few convivial hours in. The service is patchy but the food and the atmosphere more than make up for that. Lots of fun and super scrummy!

This local restaurant is very popular and always busy. I heard it’s food from the north of Thailand. When I wasn’t sure what to order, the staff recommended the grilled chicken gai yang. It came in a huge portion, so juicy and really delicious. The fish dish I tried was also amazing. The menu has English and photos, so it’s easy to choose. Beer was very cheap, and I drank a lot!!!! Every dish had a big portion, so it’s the perfect place to come with friends and share many plates. The atmosphere was lively and really gave me the feeling of being in Thailand! The restaurant is easy to reach from the station, and I definitely want to come back. Most of the customers were Thai, but there were also some foreigners. The staff seemed used to helping tourists and were very kind.

Every dish we ordered was absolutely delicious and packed with authentic Thai flavour. You can tell it’s the real deal when you see locals dining in too. The menu has plenty of options to choose from, so there’s something for everyone. The restaurant has a great atmosphere inside. Warm and inviting, It’s on a corner, so parking can be a bit limited, but takeaway is also available if you're in a rush. Loved the busy street vibes outside! it adds to the whole Bangkok style experience.
